This post is a countinually updated list of my favorite fonts.
Because I’m lazy, I don’t include the link to a font’s home page when
it can easily be found by a web search.
Love
-
Proxima Nova. Pleasant geometric sans-serif. Its versatility is
remarkable, working incredibly well both in body text and in user
interface
text. [marksimonson.com]
-
Tamzen. Just the most beautiful monospace bitmap font; it is a
fork of the original Tamsyn. This is my terminal and editor font on
macOS. [github.com]
-
Post Grotesk. Designed by Josh Finklea; it is among my favorite
Grotesque fonts. Everything about the font is stunning. I use it as the
primary font on the Littleroot website.

-
Akzidenz Grotesk. The timeless Grotesque. The licenses are now
more flexible and affordable; the font is now licensed through
myfonts.com. If I recall, the c. 2022 licensing method through the
foundry’s bertholdtypes.com website required sending in a
physically filled in order form.
-
Palatino, Pagella. Palatino, the stately serif, designed by
Hermann Zapf and released in 1949. It is installed by default on the
Amazon Kindle ereader. Pagella, the open source alternative, from the
TeX Gyre collection, is just as good; I use it as my reading font on a
Kobo ereader. Pagella itself is based on URW Palladio, which deserves
to be mentioned.
Like
-
Gotham. A geometric sans-serif. It was used brilliantly in past
years in the Evernote website and apps, which, I believe, is where I
first saw it. It can currently be seen in use by The Championships at
Wimbledon.
-
Neutral. A clean sans-serif. I saw this in use on a c. 2016
version of the website
https://chad.is. [typotheque.com]
-
-misc-fixed-*
is a collection of monospace bitmap
fonts from the X Window System, and the default font in the xterm
terminal emulator. References and download:

-
Inter. When used right, like it is on the linked home page, this
font is luscious; it is undoubtedly my favorite open source
sans-serif. [rsms.me]
-
Inconsolata: a brilliant monospace font.
-
Latin Modern Roman, Computer Modern. Serif fonts from the
TeX typesetting system. My words won’t do the fonts justice.
Shoutout
The following fonts aren’t absolute favorites but are still
excellent.
Serifs
-
Dante. This can be seen in Penguin Books’ Great Ideas series.
-
Athelas was once generally available on the Mac operating
system, but in recent versions of the operating system it is
avaialable only in restricted
contexts. Safari’s Reader
View presents it as a font choice, however. [type-together.com]
-
Equity. The official documentation recommended the A variant for
print use and the B variant for digital use (e.g. websites), but I
use the A everywhere because the B variant is too thin for my
liking. [mbtype.com]
- Valkyrie [mbtype.com]
- Bitstream Charter, Charis SIL
- Linux Libertine
- PT Serif
Sans-serifs
-
Messina Sans. I saw it on the MIT undergraduate
admissions website in 2021, and it continues to be in use in 2023. The
font is rather new, released only in 2015. The font’s Swiss foundry
has a few other nice sans-serif fonts; for example, see
Cadiz. [luzi-type.ch]
-
Concourse. Great for headings and interface text. Note that I
prefer this font with stylistic sets ss12 and ss16 turned
on. [mbtype.com]
-
Interstate. This is used excellently by SoundCloud. An
open source alternative is Overpass.
- Freight Sans
- PT Sans
Accessible
Monospace
- PragmataPro. Condensed monospace font with extensive support for
ligatures. It was my programming font for around a year in 2021–2022
before I switched to
Tamzen. [fsd.it]
- Latin Modern Teletype
- Courier
- Iosevka. Note that stylistic set ss08 makes it match
PragmataPro closely.
Display
- Abril Fatface. This is available on Google Fonts, and it is showcased
beautifully on hellohappy.org.
- Playfair Display. Ditto.
- Inter Display. See Inter above for hyperlink.
